Abstract
Abstract does not appear. First page follows.
The root-rot fungus, Armillaria mellea (Vahl.) Quél., is known to occur throughout the world in both temperate and tropical regions. The fungus, which was originally described as Agaricus melleus Vahl., is sometimes called Armillariella mellea Karst. Armillaria fuscipes Petch is also a synonym. It is commonly called the honey fungus or the honey agaric, though in various parts of the world it may be called the oak root fungus, the shoestring fungus or der Hallimasch.
It should be understood that the compilation of a complete list of hosts of any pathogen is difficult if not impossible. This is especially true where the pathogen has a large host range and is found in many areas of the world. A list can be made, however, which is somewhat more complete than the records in the abstracting journals. The journals used in making this list include the Review of Applied Mycology (R.A.M.), the Experiment Station Record (E.S.R.), Zeitschrift fur Pflanzenkrankheiten (Z. f. Pflanzenkrank.), Just’s Botanischer Jahresbericht (Botan. Jahresber.), Botanisches Centralblatt (Botan. Centbl.), Botanical Abstracts (Botan. Abstr.), Biological Abstracts (Biol. Abstr.) and Horticultural Abstracts (Hort. Abstr.). Papers were reviewed in the original wherever possible, but regardless of whether information came from the original or from an abstracting journal the latter is quoted if possible in parentheses following each reference. (See References to First Reports of Hosts, page 67.) If more than one journal abstracted an article, only the journal giving the most complete information was quoted.
In recording the hosts of a pathogen which is a facultative parasite, it is sometimes difficult to know if the organism was acting as a pathogen or if it merely invaded plants killed by some other causal agent. If reference was made in the reports only to the fungus on nonliving plants, the plant was not included in the list. All other reports were included.
The host list includes the Latin binomial and authority for the hosts where possible. In reports where only the common names were given, the genus name and if possible the species name were added and put in brackets. The
