About Hilgardia

Hilgardia was the primary, technical publication of UC Agriculture and Natural Resources for 70 years.

The monograph series, which was established in May 1925, commemorated Dr. Eugene Woldemar Hilgard (1833-1916), founding director of the California Agricultural Experiment Station. Hilgard also organized the Agriculture Department of the University of California.

Although Hilgardia ceased publication in 1995,its editionsinclude classic research, findings that are the foundation of agricultural, environmental and nutritional sciences today. Hilgardia’s content is still widely cited and valuable to industry and scholars. Yet until now, Hilgardia had virtually no online presence. It was out of print, and the remaining paperbound journals were subject to physical degradation.

Now digitized, the information in Hilgardia is freely available to scholarly and lay readers. Searchable pages display each monograph’s abstract or first page, author information and full citation list. Each of the 972 articles link to the full-text publication, which is downloadable as a high-resolution, searchable PDF.
